Dental Implants — treatment details

A dental implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone to support a replacement tooth. It is one way to replace a missing tooth without preparing the teeth on either side.

When it’s recommended

When a single tooth is missing and the teeth either side are sound, or when a denture is unstable and the bone is suitable for an implant.

What to expect

We assess the bone with X-rays, and sometimes a scan, and plan where the post will sit. It is placed under local anaesthetic, and the site is then left to heal for a period before the replacement tooth is fitted. You are given aftercare instructions at each stage.

Aftercare

Swelling and mild soreness for a few days are normal. Keep the area clean as instructed, avoid smoking while it heals, and attend the review appointments. Once restored, the implant needs the same brushing and cleaning as a natural tooth.

Common questions

How long does an implant take?

The post is placed in one appointment and then left to heal for several months before the replacement tooth is fitted. The number of visits depends on the site.

Does it hurt?

The post is placed under local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure rather than pain. Soreness for a few days afterwards is usual.

How long do implants last?

Many last well over a decade with good hygiene and regular reviews, though this varies between patients.

Am I suitable for an implant?

It depends on the amount and quality of bone, your gum health and your general health. We assess this before recommending one.
