Wisdom Tooth Removal
Assessment and removal of wisdom teeth when they are impacted or causing problems.
Wisdom Tooth Removal — treatment details
Wisdom teeth are the last molars, and there is often not enough room for them. When one is impacted — stuck beneath the gum or against the tooth in front — it can cause pain, swelling, decay and gum infection.
When it’s recommended
When a wisdom tooth causes repeated infection or pain, damages the tooth next to it, or sits where it cannot be kept clean.
What to expect
We take an X-ray to see the position of the tooth and the nerve beneath it. The area is numbed, the gum is opened if needed, and the tooth is removed — sometimes in sections. Stitches are usually placed, and you leave with written aftercare.
Aftercare
Apply a cold pack for the first day, eat soft food, and avoid smoking, straws and vigorous rinsing for a few days. Swelling usually peaks around the second or third day. Contact us if bleeding is heavy, if you have a fever, or if pain gets worse after day three.
Common questions
Does wisdom tooth removal hurt?
The area is numbed, so you feel pressure rather than pain during the procedure. Soreness and swelling for a few days afterwards are expected.
How long is recovery?
Most people are comfortable within three to five days, with the gum healing over a few weeks.
Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?
No. A wisdom tooth that has come through fully, sits straight and can be cleaned does not usually need removing. We assess each one.
What is dry socket?
A painful condition where the clot in the socket is dislodged and the bone is exposed. It needs to be seen, and following the aftercare lowers the risk of it happening.
