Veneers — treatment details
A veneer is a thin facing bonded to the front of a tooth to change its shape, shade or surface. Veneers are usually made of porcelain or a composite material.

When it’s recommended
When the front teeth are chipped, stained in a way whitening will not correct, unevenly shaped, or where a small gap is present and the appearance is what you want changed.
What to expect
We discuss what you want to change and plan the shape and shade. Some teeth need a small amount of enamel prepared and others none. Impressions or scans are taken, temporaries may be fitted, and the veneers are bonded at a later visit.
Aftercare
Avoid biting hard objects — ice, pens, fingernails — and do not open things with your teeth. Keep up regular cleanings, and tell us if a veneer feels loose or chips.
Common questions
How long do veneers last?
Often ten to fifteen years with good care, though this varies between patients.
Does getting veneers hurt?
The tooth is numbed if any enamel is being prepared. Most people find it similar to having a filling.
Are my teeth filed down?
Sometimes a small amount of enamel is prepared, and in some cases none is. What is needed depends on the tooth and the change you want.
Can veneers be replaced?
Yes. They are replaced when they wear, chip or need updating.
